Download Instagram Reels: With Sound & No Watermark
Trying to download Instagram Reels sounds simple – until you actually do it: the app only offers the download on some public Reels, burns a watermark into the video and, thanks to music licensing, often strips the sound entirely. If you genuinely need a Reel as a file – with sound, no logo, in HD – a web downloader is the way to go. This guide compares all four methods, walks you through downloading Reels on iPhone, Android and PC step by step, and gives you a level-headed look at the legal side.
Downloading Instagram Reels: The 4 Methods at a Glance
There are exactly four ways to save a Reel – and they differ significantly when it comes to sound, watermarks and quality. Before we go through each method in detail, here is the overview:
| Method | Sound | Watermark | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram's download feature | Music often removed | Yes, logo + username | Good |
| Save in the app (bookmark) | Yes, but online only | – | Not a real download |
| Web downloader (e.g. smartFollower) | Yes, original audio track | No | HD original |
| Screen recording | Yes, as system audio | No, but UI in frame | Visible quality loss |
The short version: for quick sharing, the built-in feature is fine. But as soon as you want to keep a Reel permanently or work with it, a downloader is the only method that hands you the original MP4 with sound and without a watermark.
Method 1: Instagram's Built-In Download Feature
Instagram now has its own download button: open the Reel, tap the share arrow and choose "Download". The video lands straight in your gallery – but there are three catches:
- Only available on some Reels: the account has to be public and the creator has to allow downloads. On many Reels, the option is simply missing.
- Always with a watermark: Instagram permanently burns its logo and the username into the video – and there is no removing it afterwards.
- Frequently without music: if the Reel contains licensed songs, Instagram usually strips the audio track completely during export. You end up with a silent video.
Fine for a quick one-off – but "saving Reels with sound" looks different. Especially with trend Reels that live off their audio, the export often leaves you with nothing but a muted video wearing a logo. If you want to keep the music and a clean look, you need method 3.
Method 2: Saving Reels in the App – Not a Real Download
The bookmark icon under every Reel files it into your collection (profile → menu → "Saved"). As a watchlist that's handy, but it is not a download: the file stays on Instagram's servers. If the creator deletes the Reel, switches their account to private or gets suspended, your "saved" Reel is gone. You can't watch it offline either, and nothing can be exported from the collection. The bookmark still has its uses – for collecting content ideas, say, or flagging Reels you want to watch properly later. Just don't confuse it with a download: if you want to keep a Reel for good, you need an actual video file on your own device.
Method 3: Saving Reels Without a Watermark – via Web Downloader
The most reliable route runs through a web downloader like the smartFollower Reel Downloader: copy the link to the Reel, paste it, download – and you get the original MP4 in HD, with the full audio track and no watermark. It all happens in the browser, so it works identically on iPhone, Android and PC, with no app to install and no login. The creator never finds out about the download. The only requirement: the Reel has to come from a public account.
Downloading Reels on iPhone
- Open the Reel in the Instagram app and tap the share arrow (paper plane).
- Choose "Copy link".
- Open the Reel Downloader in Safari and paste the link into the input field.
- Tap "Download" – the MP4 lands in your Files app under "Downloads".
Tip: to make the Reel show up in your Photos app, open the file in the Files app and choose Share → "Save Video". From then on it sits in your gallery like any normal video and can be reused in any editing app.
Downloading Reels on Android
- Tap the share arrow under the Reel and choose "Copy link".
- Paste the link into the Reel Downloader in your browser.
- Start the download – the MP4 lands in your "Downloads" folder and automatically appears in your gallery or Google Photos.
Downloading Reels on PC
- Open the Reel on instagram.com in your browser.
- Copy the URL from the address bar (it looks like this: instagram.com/reel/…).
- Paste the URL into the Reel Downloader and save the MP4 to your Downloads folder.
The PC route is ideal when you're collecting Reels for an edit or an archive: no detours through your phone, and large files land straight in your folder structure. It's also the fastest workflow for social media managers documenting references for clients – URL in, MP4 out, off to the project folder.
Already copied the Reel link? The smartFollower Reel Downloader saves any public Reel as an HD MP4 – with sound, without a watermark, no login required and free. Paste, download, done.
Open the Reel DownloaderBy the way: there are matching tools for other formats too. Our separate guide shows you how to download Instagram photos in original quality for pictures and carousels – and we've also covered how to save Stories with music in its own article.
Method 4: Screen Recording as a Last Resort
Both iPhone and Android have a built-in screen recorder that lets you simply film a Reel off the screen. It always works – but it's the worst option: the recording compresses the video further, UI elements like buttons and the caption end up in the frame, one incoming notification ruins the take, and you have to trim the start and end afterwards. The sound is captured as system audio, but at reduced quality as well. Screen recording only makes sense when a downloader can't get through – and with public Reels, in our experience, that practically never happens.
Is It Legal? Private Copies, Copyright and Music
The honest answer in three parts – as orientation, not legal advice:
- Downloading for personal use: under German and EU copyright law, making a private copy of publicly accessible content for yourself is generally permitted, as long as no effective copy protection is circumvented and the source is not obviously unlawful. Saving a public Reel to your private inspiration collection is therefore usually unproblematic.
- Re-posting and reusing: the moment you re-upload someone else's Reel, cut it into your own videos or use it commercially, you need the creator's permission. Without it you're infringing copyright – and a credit line like 'Credit: @username' doesn't change that.
- Music: the songs in Reels are licensed for use inside Instagram, not for your reuse. Publish a downloaded Reel complete with a chart hit somewhere else and you're risking copyright strikes and takedown claims.
When re-posting there's a second issue alongside copyright: if people are visible in the Reel, their image and privacy rights come into play too. For your private hard drive that doesn't matter – for republishing it does. Private accounts, finally, are a topic of their own: their Reels are deliberately visible only to approved followers. Downloaders can't access them – and reputable tools don't offer a way around that either.
Conclusion: Only the Downloader Route Delivers Everything
Downloading Instagram Reels without compromise – meaning with sound, without a watermark and in HD – only works via a web downloader like the Reel Downloader. The built-in feature is fine for quick cases, the bookmark is a watchlist, screen recording a last resort. Remember the three-step rule: copy the link, paste it, save the MP4 – the same on every device. What your download is allowed to do afterwards depends on the purpose: saving privately yes, republishing without permission no. And if you save content regularly, it's worth a look at the Story Downloader – and at how to view Stories anonymously before you save them.
